A recent attack carried out by alleged Ukrainian terrorists in Russia’s western Bryansk Region damaged a power substation and caused a blackout in a village.
According to Russia Today (RT), Bryansk Gov. Aleksandr Bogomaz confirmed the incident in a Telegram post. He wrote that the attack by “Ukrainian terrorists” during the morning of Sept. 30 disrupted the power supply of Pogar village, some 20 kilometers away from the border with Ukraine. Bogomaz added that there were no casualties, and emergency services were already working at the scene.
Several Russian news channels on Telegram published footage of the purported Bryansk power plant on fire. However, officials shared no further details about the incident or whether it was caused by a drone. The Russian Ministry of Defense (MO) has yet to issue a comment on the alleged terrorist attack against the power plant.
Several hours after the Bryansk attack, the governor of the neighboring Belgorod region said air defense units had intercepted several hostile targets – with two Ukrainian drones being destroyed. According to the MO, the second drone was shot down four hours after the first one was “thwarted.” The ministry also added that Kyiv fired nine rockets from the BM-27 Uragan system, but all were destroyed mid-air.
On Sept. 29, Russian military forces shot down 10 drones over the Kursk Region. However, one of the drones managed to damage an electrical substation and cause a local blackout.
Kursk Gov. Roman Starovoyt posted on Telegram that “a Ukrainian drone dropped two explosive devices on a substation” located in the village of Belaya. “One of the transformers caught fire. Five settlements and a hospital were cut off from [the] power supply.” (Related: Ukrainian drones conduct explosive attacks on Russian power stations.)
RT noted that the regions of Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod under Russia, as well as the disputed Crimea region and the Russian capital Moscow, have been frequently targeted by Ukrainian drones since the war began in February 2022. Regions of the country are now regularly subject to waves of Ukrainian drone strikes that have sporadically damaged buildings and other structures,
Moscow has accused Kyiv of plotting acts of sabotage against Russia’s major infrastructure sites, including nuclear power plants. Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian territory in recent weeks as its ground counteroffensive has failed to yield any significant victories.
Russian officials have downplayed the significance of the drone attacks. Nevertheless, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that attacks on Russian targets would increase.
“We clearly see the areas where pressure on Russia needs to be increased so that terrorist capabilities do not grow,” he said on Sept. 26 during his nightly address. “Sanctions are not enough; there will be more. There will be more of our own – Ukrainian actions against the terrorist state. As long as Russia’s aggression continues, Russia’s losses must be tangible.”
Mac Slavo of SHTF Plan predicted that the next phase of the Russia-Ukraine war would be disastrous.
“Russia has long warned that Ukraine will step over the line. They claim Ukraine will use a nuclear device at some point too, and the West will blame it on Russia in order to advance the war efforts,” he wrote. “It seems like the war is consistently ramping up, yet hasn’t really exploded to include the whole world yet. The obvious proxy war may become a hot war between Russia and the West anytime.”
