French President Emmanuel Macron said on Oct. 17 that the threat of “Islamist terrorism” is increasing and it will affect all of Europe.
“All European states are vulnerable, and there is indeed a resurgence of Islamist terrorism,” Macron warned during a visit to Albania. The French leader’s visit came days after radical Islamist terrorists killed several people across the continent, with some attacks involving members of the Islamic State.
Macron’s proclamation came just days after a 20-year-old radical Islamist stabbed one individual to death and injured three others in France. The suspect reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is great) while conducting his attack. His father was deported due to his connections to Islamist extremism, while his older brother remains imprisoned for his involvement in preparing the attack.
A day before Macron spoke in Albania, a 45-year-old Tunisian gunman killed two Swedish football fans in Belgium. In response, Belgium raised its terrorism alert level in the capital to its maximum. Macron reiterated how his country stands in “solidarity with our Belgian friends.”
Macron’s statement also comes amid Israel declaring a “state of war” with Hamas and other Palestinian militant organizations in Gaza after over 1,300 Israelis, mainly civilians, have been killed. He has stated his desire to visit Israel in the coming days or weeks to express France’s support for Jerusalem.
“My desire is to be able to travel there when we can obtain a concrete agreement either on non-escalation or on humanitarian issues and more broadly on everything,” said Macron. “Israel’s security, the fight against all terrorist groups, as well as the peace process and the political solution are all interconnected. This is the agenda we need to rediscover.”
The widespread Islamist terrorism in Europe inflames tensions over security, opening the discussion on immigration in France. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin noted that the government plans to strengthen the existing immigration bill with new measures before parliamentary debates next month. “For individuals who are under 13 years old, are married to a French national, or have children in France, there are protections that prevent us from expelling them unless they have attacked the interests of the nation. But this bill will enable us to lift these conditions,” he explained.
Although France has been on high alert since recent hostilities between Hamas and Israel, the French government still faces criticism for its failure to prevent Islamist attacks.
“How many French citizens will we watch die?” asked Olivier Marleixa, a member of the French National Assembly from the conservative Les Republicains party. “This new attack symbolizes our state’s powerlessness. We must no longer tremble in the face of Islamism and mass immigration.”
“We must no longer tremble in the face of Islamism and mass immigration,” Eric Ciotti, president of Les Republicains, echoing Marleixa’s sentiment.
The interior minister suggested a connection between the attack in France and the situation in the Middle East. Now, the government has turned the pressure on the opposition to garner their support for the immigration bill.
