In a nation grappling with an unprecedented border crisis, the actions of elected officials are under intense scrutiny. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), a prominent member of the progressive “Squad,” is now facing serious allegations that she may have crossed a legal and ethical line by actively aiding illegal immigrants in evading Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
The controversy stems from a recent webinar hosted by Ocasio-Cortez, in which she and other speakers provided detailed instructions on how undocumented immigrants can resist ICE enforcement efforts. The webinar, which has drawn sharp criticism from law enforcement officials and conservative leaders, raises critical questions about the role of elected officials in undermining federal immigration laws.
Former Acting ICE Director and Border Czar Tom Homan, a staunch advocate for border security, has taken direct action in response to Ocasio-Cortez’s webinar. In an appearance on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle, Homan revealed that he has formally requested the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate whether the congresswoman’s actions constitute obstruction of law enforcement.
“I sent a letter today to the deputy attorney general. At what level is that impediment? Is that impediment? I’m not an attorney, I’m not a prosecutor. Is that impeding our law enforcement efforts? If so, what are we going to do about it?” Homan stated during the interview.
Homan’s concerns are not unfounded. During the webinar, Ocasio-Cortez explicitly encouraged resistance to ICE operations, stating, “When one of these things [raids] comes to your backyard, you can resist, and when that happens over millions of people, is that you generate enough friction that they cannot go as fast as they want to go.”
This rhetoric has alarmed national security experts, who argue that such actions could embolden criminal elements and undermine the rule of law. “Is she crossing the line? Where’s that line that they crossed, so maybe AOC is going to be in trouble or not? But I need the AG to opine on that,” Homan added.
This is not the first time Ocasio-Cortez and her allies have clashed with federal immigration enforcement. Since her election in 2018, she has been a vocal critic of ICE, even calling for its abolition. Her recent webinar is part of a broader trend among progressive lawmakers to resist the Trump administration’s immigration policies, which have prioritized the deportation of criminal illegal immigrants.
President Donald Trump, who campaigned on a promise to conduct the largest deportation operation in U.S. history, has made good on his word. In the first two weeks of his second term, ICE confirmed the removal of over 6,000 illegal immigrants. This aggressive enforcement has sparked backlash from sanctuary cities and progressive lawmakers, who argue that such actions are inhumane and unconstitutional.
However, critics counter that the Constitution does not grant elected officials the authority to obstruct federal law enforcement. “Excuse me? Am I missing something here? Where in the Constitution does it permit helping criminal illegal aliens avoid deportation?” one critic wrote on social media.
The webinar, hosted on Ocasio-Cortez’s social media platforms, provided detailed instructions on how to avoid or obstruct ICE agents. Speakers outlined tactics such as refusing to open doors without a judicial warrant, remaining silent during questioning, and recognizing common ruses used by ICE to gain entry into private spaces.
“These agents will go to homes early in the morning to make arrests,” explained Genia, a speaker at the webinar. “They’ll stop people on the street or in public places, which could include a public area of a workplace.” Another speaker, Laura, warned that ICE agents often use deception to gain access to private spaces. “They either want to deceive you into thinking that they’re not ICE, or they’ll lie so you come to believe they do have a right to enter,” she said.
While Ocasio-Cortez framed the webinar as an effort to educate immigrants about their rights, critics argue that it goes beyond mere education. “This is ILLEGAL. AOC is breaking the law. She is advising illegals how to evade ICE. Lock her up,” one pro-MAGA account tweeted.
The debate over Ocasio-Cortez’s webinar is not just about one congresswoman’s actions—it’s about the broader implications for national security. With millions of illegal immigrants currently residing in the U.S., the enforcement of immigration laws is critical to maintaining public safety and sovereignty.
Homan’s decision to involve the DOJ underscores the seriousness of the situation. If the department determines that Ocasio-Cortez’s actions constitute obstruction, it could set a precedent for holding elected officials accountable for undermining federal law enforcement.
As the nation watches this unfolding drama, one thing is clear: the battle over immigration enforcement is far from over.
